Let's join hands and make infant mortality a thing of the past by supporting human milk banking in Africa, starting from Ghana.
People everywhere must know about the benefits of human milk banking and fully partake in it. Women and mothers must be taught about the value of breast milk to the survival of a baby.
We stand for premature and medically fragile babies in need. Your support for these vulnerable babies is highly appreciated.
About 10,000 mothers and babies in rural and peri-urban areas in Ghana are expected to be impacted annually through our interventions and programmes; and your partnership is key to our success.
... and that's when infant mortality rates can see a sharp decline.
Why Human Milk Banking In Ghana and Africa Matters...
In a comparative study of very low birth-weight / preterm infants, availability of donor human milk reduced the incidence of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) from ~5.1% down to ~2.9% (a reduction of ≈ 43%).
In Ghana each year more than 128,000 babies are born prematurely (preterm) and complications from prematurity contribute to an estimated 30% of under-five mortality. Preterm babies often cannot feed well and may particularly benefit from donor human milk when mother’s own milk is insufficient or unavailable.
Among a sample of Ghanaian women (n = 949) it was found that 77.2% were willing to donate milk to a human milk bank, and 69.4% believed that donating would favour their own child.
In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), about 43% of global newborn deaths occur, with a neonatal mortality rate of around 27 deaths per 1,000 live births
Human Milk Africa is a Ghana-based nonprofit organization committed to saving the lives of vulnerable infants through the promotion and establishment of human milk banking across Africa.
We believe that every newborn deserves the best start in life — and that access to safe, donated breast milk can make the difference between life and death, especially for premature and low-birth-weight babies. Our mission is to reduce infant mortality rates by creating a sustainable network of human milk banks, supporting breastfeeding mothers, and raising awareness about the life-saving benefits of breast milk donation. We work closely with hospitals, healthcare providers, and community partners to ensure that no baby is left without the nourishment they need to survive and thrive...
